Guest
I can use some advice on my Muskie catch rate or lack of in my case.Every time I go and target Muskie I just plain out and out strike out. Now, every time I go and target smallies,I get a Muskie to nail my lures almost every trip I make, needless to say the Muskie usually wins, lighter tackle, line and lures, really dont want to make an excuse but would like to at least even the odds. What should I do??? Big_D
if i were you i would go to my smallmouth spots and fish for muskies since you keep getting them to hit while your not fishing for them. even though thats what usually happens they hit when you least expect it.------------------Big D
David Swenson
Big D is right. Just go back to those same bass spots and fish muskies. Use a heavier rod, reel, line, and make sure you have a leader. As for baits, use smaller muskie spinnerbaits or bucktails in the same colors they hit your bass tackle on. You could probably even throw the same bass spinnerbaits you are using for bass. Guest
The funny thing is I usually toss 3" kalins grubs for my smallies or small plastic crawfish.I had a smallie landed and released, well while changing my grub I spotted a huge muskie with his top fins above the surface and about a foot away from my boat,I tossed all kinds of lures towards him/her and of course no hook-ups,I took my rod tip and reached out and touched it and of course the fish took off, this fish had NO FEAR of me or the boat, think maybe he was looking for me to fall over???lol
stephendawg
Grant Hughes on Lake vermilion has told me he's observed smallies flanking muskies on the reefs many times through the years so it's no surprise to me what you've observed. Smallies have a lot of heart and are even suicidal when it comes to their turf. Being a top of the line predator in their own right makes it easy to understand why they would commonly be found on the same "prime" structure. I agree with David and Big D; add a leader and toss you lighter musky gear from time to time on these spots. I know I will. Good luck!------------------...if I only had more time off!...Dawg
guideman
Hi Bill,Your not alone, this happens alot to meon Lake Vermilion. Last summer while I was Prefishing witha bass pro up for the MNProAm, we had 5 muskies in the boat, before we caught a smallmouth. All of them hit a 3/4oz spinnerbait, itwas one of my best days of the season and I wasn't even fishing for them! ------------------Ace guide service.Beautiful Lake Vermilion.aceguideservice.com[email protected]

Steve Foss
CMWINTER: Not to mention if you're catching bass with musky lures they oughta be BRUISERS! I've caught several largemouths, always over 3 and mostly over 4 pounds, in the fall near Bemidji using a musky sized spinnerbait tipped with a sucker. I'm actually after those big fall pig female pike, but will take the bass, too. Not much sport, pulling in a bass on 25 lb Fireline.
