log jams... how close is too close....

Just wondering if any of you have ever tried setting up by half in half out log jams aka a downed tree in the water, seen some guys tip up fishing and catching nords by the and was wondering if it was even safe to cut a spear hole close to them what's ur guys' opinion I'm skeptical about it...

I would be skeptical too. I was out last weekend and marked my hole after with a nice big branch. Yesterday when I got done I went to grab the same branch to mark my new hole. I thought I would have to break it off but when I tugged it came right out. It was not frozen in after a week! It's been a weird year ice wise. I would stay away.
