Yeah, I MOSTLy do trophy class 'bows and steelies and salmon.... BUT, since there isn't that high ammount of lakes in the midwest to do that, I find myself casting unusually large flies to pike and muskie.

I actually have used dahlberg divers a lot... BUT, my most effective fly I've used is one I tie myself...... it's big... it's flashy... it's pink.... and it SUCKS to cast wink.gif

Last year did Lake of the Woods Canada side and got a 46 inch pike...

I love the strikes these fish provide, but am not too impressed with the fight, but, I am a fly fishing junkie and would probably cast in water with no fish wink.gif

You do any river fishing for pike ever?

River fishing for pike is my favorite.

having fished rivers and streams most of my life, I find them much more productive for ME because I know them much more....

Lakes are fun, but only if you know the lake really really well wink.gif Specially if your casting a fifty pound fly to pike wink.gif

The Chippewa River in WI (near Jim Falls) is excellent the times I've done it... I have caught quite a few that weren't even hooked since the pike had grabbed onto the smallies I was catching in the slack water....

But, all in all... I'm a trout man.... pike are just fun for the strike smile.gif

Lake of the Isles has all kinds of Northerns, Bass, and a good population of muskies... Its a good fishery and I could see using the fly rod ... all the fish I catch in that lake is in 12' or less, regardless of season.

Only downfall with that glorified noodle in your hand and deer hide tied to the end of your line .. your going to have to fish out of a boat or you'll be catching joggers every 5th cast. I have a hard enough time with my 8 1/2' rods and joggers.

Fishing for Pike on with a fly rod is the best. I could give you a tip or two. I've spent about 30 years fly fishing for trout, bass, crappie and bluegills but there just bait for them big pike. Try a lefty's or a reynolds. I've been off the forum for a while so, sorry I didn't see this months ago. StM

Luke Geraty -
I haven't flyfished since I was a teenager in VT, mostly for panfish, 'cause I didn't have a flyrod or waders, just an ultralight spin rod with some braided and tippet. But anyway - back to your rivers question for Pike -
almost any of the tributaries to the Might Miss will hold pike, and they read like most creeks. Don't be surprised, though, if your wetfly attracts a carp or two in the backwaters. My boy hit a carp on a crawler, so I imagine they eat bugs, too. I've seen river 'eyes hit small in-line spinners as well, so they might be attracted to a flashy streamer. Good luck.
