Plankton?

I have be looking into why my Humminbird has been unreadable with clutter at night fishing French Lake. I thought my battery was bad, so I got a new one. I fished a different lake yesterday and the issue seemed fixed. Then that night I headed to the same lake where the problem first occurred and had the problem again. So I have been researching fixes and looking at the FL20 for my upcoming fishing trip to LOW.

Well, I found a post that explains clutter on a flasher at night as being Plankton. Is this correct? I have never ran into this problem before, but I have never fished this one lake a night either.

My first trip in a sleeper on Mille Lacs one of the houses had a quad Aqua Vu with lights so we could actually see at night. Just after dark we started seeing all these small bug like creatures coming up from the bottom, within a half an hour there were clouds of them so thick you couldn't see anything but them. This may very well be them problem on this particular lake, I pick up the same thing on my bird when I am out after dark on my lake.

Plankton sounds like what you are seeing. It can totally clutter up your screen like nothing else.

Don't give up, however. I've had some pretty good crappie bites in a plankton fog.
