erikwells
In terms of reproducing pike what are the lengths of fish that an angler concerned with conservation should return to the lake. I typically keep pike in the 21 to 24 inch range. I want to know if this is the proper size of fish to keep when I want a meal. I always keep a disposable camera in my boat for a quick picture of the bigger fish before I put them back. Also closed circuit to all of the walleye fisherman. I would eat a northern pike before a walleye any day of the week. Once the y bones are removed the meat is great and more firm than a walleye. Guest
Sounds like you're doing the right thing. A lot of lakes should be harvested fairly heavily of their small pike, as these guys are terrific predators and compete with the breeders. No argument from me on eating pike. In fact, I've served fried fillets (Frying Magic) of both walleye and northern to various folks over the years without telling them I had pike in the mix. NO ONE has ever noticed the difference, and they rave about how good the "walleyes" taste. The only give-away is if I miss a Y-bone.
