wat causes rod jump?

Got a old berkly lightning ice rod 17 yrs old, caught many but lost some due to the rod blank jumping or iguesse boucning wen Id realy infish,is it a poor spine or just wore out. Its a great rod an dont wanna retire it but im not gona risk loosing any fish because of it either. Any help is great thanks, boar

boar had one doing kind of the same thing years ago. the blank was loose in the handle on mine. and i was not drinking when this happened so i know it was true. now i'm not so sure about your condition, but just something you might look at on your rod. smile

Boar, the first guide (closest to the reel) is located too far from the reel. I've had that guide come lose and fall off once and the results were similar to what you are experiencing.

Nailed it, The distance changes from long to short with each turn of the bail on the reel, you can either move the guide farther up the blank, try a smaller reel, try a reel like a fly reel( never have to worry about it), or make a small wedge out of wood to aim the reel more at the eye......

Thanks guys , I'll look at these things, i have plenty of rods, but this one is sentamental, dont really need to use it but do from time to time, no im not related to them. Thanks again. Boar
