Heating and Cooling question

I am looking at buying a small cabin. 500sq ft. I will be gutting it out and adding on. for a total of 800 sq ft. the plans are for a small bathroom 2 small bedrooms kitchen and living area + a 200 sqft loft. I would like to have a electric forced air system for heating and cooling. What options might I have for such a small footprint?

2 ways you can go. Mini slit system or PTAC System. Minislip is just like a mini central air unit. Yes you can get them in a heat pump. Will probably only heat your house down to say 20 degrees or so. Otherwise a PTAC is what you see in hotel rooms. They make those in heat pump versions to one advantage to them is they have built in electric heat banks to aid in below 20 degree weather.

I think you can add a heat coil in your air handler with a heat pump to aid in the heating.

I would go with a air handler with an heating element. You can hook up the heat pump to that. Make sure you get the modgulating elements to use with the heat pump. As it gets colder out it will only kick in 5kw at a time when it needs it. If you go with a higher seer heat pump you could get it to run down to 0 deg when set up.

My house is a bit under 1,000 sq ft. I have a natural gas furnace with electric heaters in the plenum. Power draw is 18kW for the electric heat which, with the off peak rate I get, costs less than burning natural gas. In terms of gas heat, I believe that 18kW of electric heat is roughly 60,000 BTU/h.

If you're talking fully electric heat, you may also be looking at upgrading the electrical service depending on what's there now. My place has a 150A service. Not really sure why they didn't just go to the more common 200A service, but it was all done before I bought the place.

I would go with the mni split for heating and cooling....another option if you have L.P. or natural gas... you could go with a gas fireplace rated for space heating....some of these units are 40-60000 btu output and would heat that small of a space
