Best or Unique musky lure (action)

BIG

Recommended Posts

...the side-to-side action of the 'jackpot' and 'reef hawg' and the slow action of the 'creeper' make them remarkable musky lures because of their 'unique' action in the water, and new musky anglers would be well advised to use these lures....Are there any other musky lures out there that provide unique action that anglers have had success with???

Someone has already posted a 6"-9" white sluggo and I think this qualifies...others?

An old reliable is the Cisco Kid. Originally it was an early "crank bait" (before that term was used). It has a tantalizing wobbling action. I believe it is now made and sold by Suick, but I think it has the same specs as the original.

Black/silver has been my favorite.

...(1) since I know you are a spinnerbait fan, we'd have to include dropping spinnerbaits down the weedline and 'ripping' weeds...and, (2) the large shadrap is also good for ripping weeds....although neither lure has unique action on its own....

Here are a few of my "Unique" lures.

Magnum Jitterbug -- Wobble and plop across the top.

Fuzzy Duzzit -- Blade bait (like the cicadas and sonics.)

Hawg Wobbler -- Slow surface wobble.

Bull Dawg -- Just one Awesome Lure! Work it like a crankbait, jerkbait or a jig -- it does it all.

When the basic lures aren't catching fish, you need to use something that gets their attention.

Completely agree with the Bulldawg assessment!! I've had good luck with magnum plastics too. Used up every one I had up on Eagle Lake, ON last summer. Action Plastics makes a LARGE baitfish looking plastic with the grub type tail. (Got mine thru Cabela's online catalog in the saltwater tackle section) They come in 6", 9" & 12" models in some good colors. I thread a piano wire leader thru the nose and out of the bait about 1 1/2" to 2" from the tail end and then attach a 3/0 or 4/0 heavy duty treble to the back end. You can do a slow swim retrieve, jerk it, splash it like a topwater, whatever. What's really good is that the bait has such a slow sink rate it's easy to fish right over the top of any submerged weeds. Try it in the spring when slower can be better!!

...thanks guys - forgot about the Bulldawgs and other plastics.....

Here's another one : musky candy ( a very small bucktail that is dynamite, especially on Cass Lake - this is not a secret lure on Cass) It is a good lure to use when nothing is biting...

If I had to pick three out of Tom's list it would be.
Bama
Bobbie
Hawg Wobbler

I caught a 42" pike on my Amma Bama and it's gut split open yesterday, I emailed the guy that makes them and he told me how to fix it or send it back to him and he will take care of it free of charge, it's the only one I have left so I followed his instructions and it's as good as new minus the beautifull paint job that it once had. This has to be the easiest glider to use, big wide swings when cranking slow and a hang time on the pause like no other.

My bread n butter is baby jointed depth raiders in natural perch and shimmering shad. They catch muskies and lots of forage.

I'm anxious to try something that's probably been done before but I've never seen it or heard of anyone mention it. I am using the biggest Johnson Silver Spoon I can get and trailing it with a 10" brown and white Sluggo. It responds beautifully to slow rod sweeps and twitches. The trailer weaves side to side like a giant leech or snake and seems like it would be a great option in skinny to mid-depth water. Opinions? Criticisms? Thanks!

....we all have to know if you catch anything with that lure....there is a "poster' on Musky 101 who says it takes him 1,000,000 casts to catch a musky....therefore, you can see that a lot of the time it doesn't matter what you throw, you are just filling up numbers between 1 and 1,000,000...or you could catch two fish on consecutive casts at 1,999,998 and 1,999,999. ...keep casting man and pick the best times - avoid sun.....but - innovation is good......

There's no doubt in my mind that the spoon/trailer is a good option for pike and musky. Typically, after spawn I'm like most. I go a little deeper and speed up my presentations a little depending on the mood of the fish. I just like the giant soft plastics as an option and believe that weed cover, a stiff rod and some elbow grease can "Jack Up" a fish when you rip and flutter a spoon. The BullDawgs work great here in IN but may be becoming too common on some of our smaller glacial lakes. I guess we're always looking for new options aren't we? It's fun though. Sure am thankful for a swimming pool in the back yard.
