N. Pike in the news

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd pass this on.....
Interesting article in the NYTimes. Sounds as though they have a problem that Minnesota would want, considering the MnDNR is trying to increase size & population of larger pike. Maybe the MnDnR should see what the conditions are in this lake that makes the N. Pike there so populous & growing fast.
BTW....If you asked the Calif. Fish & Game, I'd bet they'd let ya take as many as you like! wink.gif

Well, it is/was an interesting article. To me at least. Thanks for the "heads-up" on the "bad" link, GullGuide.

See ya out there!

MNSports,
Might as well delete the link, all it is is for their subscription service. Anyways,
Without reading the article, I can bet the reason these fish are growing so large and so fast is that they are feasting on the stocked trout that many lakes in CA have in them. This is the same reason that the bass are growing to near world-record sizes. If you have spent any time in the mine pits around Crosby or Ironton, the same is true with the pike in these lakes. Although it is nice to have these large pike, it comes at the expense (literally, since many dollars are spent by the MNDNR to stock the pits every year) of the stocked trout.
Only 5 more days.....

I guess I could have pasted the whole article for viewing, but I thought it would be just using space on here, that is already on another page(The NY Times newspaper[Apr.6th,2002).

If you are interested enough to read it the title of the article is "Predator Fish"

GGuide, I have been in the Iron-pits area, but haven't fished there. I didn't know that they had a problem like that. Seems to me that if they quit stocking trout there for a few years & allowed a
"prolific fishing/expanded limit" of N.Pike in those waters, they would significantly reduce the #'s of Essox in those same waters.

[but, since I'm not a fisheries biologist, what the Heck do I know anyway. wink.gif]

If there is such a problem, I'm surprised that more "pikers" don't flock there as a "Mecca" of pike fishing. That in itself would reduce the amount of pike soon enough, wouldn't ya think?

Regardless, I stil thought the article interesting, since it reminded me that "one persons' junk , is another persons' treasure"; in a funny sort of way.

See ya out there!
