What, Where, and When???

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty new to the musky scene myself, and could use some help on what baits to throw. I have a few bucktails, a few deep diving Jakes, 2 top water plugs and one Suick 9". Now, I realize I should have thousands of more lures, but what I have, hasn't caught me a fish yet. The 5 muskies I netted in my life have all been relatively small, biggest 38", but all pulling shad raps. Now how should I attack with my other baits? What colors are best. Bucktails are Black and chartruese, and yellow and silver. Should I have more white and silver? Mostly shad colored plugs, and my Suick is perch. Basically, I need more help...maybe just more patience too. Thanks

Hammer em',

The lures you stated are all good and I have caught fish on all them. In fact, on the perch suick a friend boated a 49" muskie in my boat last year.

The best thing for you to do is try to gain knowledge from magazine's, video's, speakers, and forum's like this one. If you can, fish with someone who has a lot of experience or hire a guide. Fish for muskies every chance you get. Join a club, such as, Muskies, Inc. and go to their monthly meetings.

If you have a question, just post in this forum and someone (or many) will respond. Sometimes with the same info, other times with differing info.

Aquire as much knowledge as possible from anyone you can. This is how you will improve your muskie fishing.

As for my opinion on lures, get a black and silver bucktail (a big one) and throw it 50% of the time or more.

Good luck and keep asking questions.

No magic lures out there, I have tried them all! The only way to shorten the time between fish is to learn as much off the water, as you do on. Read the books, watch the videos and ask the questions -- There is a lot of info out there, and not all will agree -- they write about their lakes in their part of the country -- You need to focus on the issues that help you in your area, and let the other info fill in some blanks, but not confuse the issues. Make sure you bring some of those lures to the Big V on June 1st! What better place to try and break the ice. I will be up there, and should make it to the "ACE's Campground" to meet everyone.
