hello, i had a fishing trip planned to south dakota this friday and have heard the ice is kinda iffy for truck travel and someone suggested i go to red lake instead. im looking for opinions on whether i go to south dakota and bring the 4-wheeler and try to get out or go up to red and try that. i have never fished either one before so i am just looking for some opinions on either one. any help is greatly appreciated thanks

You'd be fine if you have a wheeler to come out to SD. We do have some lakes with some spots of open water, mostly from waterfowl still staging on them, but there is plenty of lakes with 8-10 inches of ice north of 212. even some of the lakes down here around Sioux Falls still have a solid 6-8". I would just check the ice reports for the lake you plan on fishing, by stopping in at a local bait shop. If fishing the northeast part of the state, give Sportsman's Cove in Webster a call. If fishing the mid-eastern part of the state, call the Bait Box in Lake Preston. If south east, Dakota Angler in Sioux Falls.

Red is on fire but not closer if you are looking at going to the Webster area.

Even with good ice conditions in SD most years you need a wheeler or sled to get around no plowed roads on most the lakes and you need to get out from the few small ice villages that there are.

We bring a sled every year out there. There are a few lakes if snow is not a problem yet you can out on but most times we just take the sled out a lot easier to get on the smaller ponds and hit the perch and eyes.
