Mr Heater Blue Flame heater

My buddy and I use the wall-mounted ventless Mr. Heater (it's a red model) for the camper we converted to a fish house. It kicks out plenty of heat and we've never had it shutdown due to low oxygen. Although, as I mentioned it's an old camper so I'm certain more air gets in than in a wheelhouse.

Still, no problems with the low oxy shut-off and we've never gotten headaches or anything from it - and I've sat pretty close to it.

It works the same as the buddy heaters. As the amount of oxygen depletes, the pilot light burning on the thermocouple burns lower and lower until the thermocouple kicks off turning off the heater.

It does nothing to sense carbon monoxide poisoning...

They call them safe because "generally speaking" carbon monoxide build up displaces oxygen and it should cut the heater off. But it is a far cry from truly monitoring the air for carbon monoxide.

You have to be your own judge there.

I'd sleep with a cracked window or 2 personally if using this type of heater. (And I have)

I would not put my life on the line and trust a piece of electronics. We go to LOW for 2weeks every year and we have never shut the windows until we hit the highway. One window on each side of the house and the are both cracked a little depending on outside wind. Never run your generator below an open window however. Those fumes can get in through the window and kill as well.

I had posted a very similar question here almost 10 years ago. All the replys told me to go with a direct vent heater especially since I had the kids with. I went with an Empire wall unit and although it was quite a bit more than the ventless it is still running like the day I bought it. Nothing better than peice of mind as you drift off to sleep instead of having a nagging feeling about your heater choice. And of course you'll want a CO2 detector regardless.
