MARINETTE, Wis. - A fisherman broke through thin ice on a flowage in Marinette County and drowned.

Sheriff's officials say they got a call about 1 p.m. Tuesday reporting that someone may have fallen through the ice on High Falls Flowage in the Town of Stephenson.

The sheriff's department's dive team recovered the body of 69-year-old George McDonough of the Town of Stephenson about three hours later. The Marinette County coroner says the cause of death is drowning.

Sheriff officials have issued a warning about thin ice, especially on rivers and flowages which have stronger currents

Need to be more vigilant of the ice conditions. This is the 3rd drowning I've heard of in my immediate area in the past 2 days....The ice just hasn't had the temps low enough on a consistent basis to make "Good" solid ice this year as of yet.

I got called out to a little lake in my fire district for a missing fisherman with just his bucket and tip up on the ice. Thank God he had just left the lake to retrieve some items from his truck. Ice rescues are rarely ever positive in any nature and very dangerous to do. My heart sinks everytime I hear the page for one. Let's get educated and be responsible when playing with mother nature. Stay Safe and Tight Lines!!
