Tail Tumor?

Rino

Recommended Posts

I was just out this weekend and my son caught a big gill. It's tail was as wide as it's belley. Upon cleaning the fish I found a hard mass about the size of a supperball surrounded by tissue. Inside the mass it was like bone.

Has anyone else seen this and is the rest of the fillets edible?

To stay on the safe side, I'd just discard the fish. Some things show up that make eating the meat after seeing it hard to do anyway. If you have the occasion to fish the same waters again and find yet another fish with this sort of anomilie growing on or in it, I'd take it to your regional fisheries department and let one of their researchers dig into it a bit.
