"The Big Fatty"

I remember ice fishing with my brother as a kid. Hand drilled 6 inch hole in the ice house. My Brother hooked a large Northern Pike, got it to the hole and started to bring it up, but it was too fat to bring through the 6 inch hole all the way. Although we never to got it in the house, we still talk about that fish 40 years later.

Have a short ice fishing story to share, post it here.

Have fun reminiscing.

Winter of 1985. West Central MN lake.

First ice. Ice froze crystal clear with no snow. About 3 inches of ice.

No snow and a crstal clear lake. Late night. Full moon.

I was tipup ice fishing.

Caught a 3,4,5 and 10 pound walleye and lost one that was very close to the size of the 10 pounder.

With the clear ice, the clear water and the full moon I could watch the fish come right up from the bottom. It was like standing on top of a huge aquarium. I would watch them take line and swim side to side. When they got near the hole...they would swim right under the ice. with just 3 inches of clear glass like ice I could watch them and direct them right to the hole and would reach under the ice to grab them. The temps were like 40 degrees with no wind.

It was pretty surreal - and I will never forget that night.

I had a friend a few years back that had a flg go up, he went over and missed the fish came back to the portable and got another minnow. He went back to the tip up got on his knees put the minnow on and sent it back down the hole. He was useing a split shot as his marker and put it in his mouth to open it up to set the marker up a foot and the fish came back and took the minnow, I never laughed so hard when I saw his face hit the ice.

Couple years ago me and a group of friends were fishing Winnie, they had some porta potty's out on the ice compliments of the resort we went through. Well a buddy of mine decided it was time to go "use" the facilities, and after a couple of minutes one of the resort trucks with a plow comes behind the outhouse and is pushing it to move it to a different spot with our friend still in there! He dove out of the house before he got his pants up, oh boy We laughed forever, and still to this day about that!

My wife had not ice fished in years so I asked her to go out with me several years ago. Loaded up the 4 wheeler on the trailer, put the portable and gear in the truck bed and headed out.

At the lake, the 4 wheeler would not start, pulled the portable and gear out to our spot. Auger would not start. Flipped up the portable and fired up the heater, warmed up for a few minutes, packed up and walked off the ice.

We still laugh about our "fishing" trip to the ice, and she still comes out with me today. All in all, it is still a great memory.

My first ice fishing memory. I'm about 5 or 6 years old fishing with my dad in a warm firehouse catching lots of perch. Ironically, the most vivid part of the memory is my dad building a barricade to keep me from falling in. This was before the auger days (I'm 61 y.o.) so fishing holes were chipped/sawed about 1 1/2 ft. wide by the length of the house.

I don't remember, but I guess my dad started taking me with him when I was just a couple years old. As the story goes, he was fishing out the car door. He looks up and sees some toddler wandering on the ice about a hundred yards away (remember the size of the holes). Turns out, I'd rolled the window down, crawled out, and went for a stroll. According to Dad, he still took me with him, but tied a rope around my leg and tied the other end to the door handle.

Ice fishing always meant grape soda for me and schnapps for my pop!

When i was a kid we use to beg dad to take us out icefishing after church on sundays. We were pretty limited he only had a two wheel drive pickup three boys and a six inch electric auger that would drill crooked. He did have a old four by eight flip up portable thou so we got that set up once and my two younger brothers were ouside playing when we heard them start yelling. My youngest brother probably about five was at his elbows he had fallen down a ten inch hole dad grabbed his hood and lifted him out. Needless to say he stayed in the old portable for the rest of the day.

Ive had a lot of good memorys out on the ice but the most memorable one would have to be when my dad took my new black lab out to the fish house in the morning before work and i was suppose to come out later when he hads to go to work. i had just walked into the door of the fish house when i see my new pup take a big stretch on the bed in the house, fall of the bed hit the floor and bounce head first down the 8 inch ice hole next to the bed. my dad dives down to the hole and grabs her by the tail and pulls her back onto the floor soaking wet. A scary moment to almost lose a good friend but 10 years later she stills goes evreywhere with me even out to the fish house and still sleeps on the same bed just a little bigger and older now

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
