Hitch Haulers

Anyone know of a hitch hauler that would work for a Clam Voyager? I'd like it to extend out a ways so my tailgate can remain down when hauling. The reason for that is so I can transport my snowmobile with the porty. I drive an Avalanche so the box is too short to lift the track and close the tailgate...

Are you talking about hauling on the road, or over ice? (I'm guessing on the road, since you'd probably be towing with the snowmobile on the ice...)

You could just build a rack for the back end of your snowmobile and store the porty there when you're driving. Then you'd also have the option of putting the porty up on the sled if you're out in really soupy conditions. Keep the slush out of it...

I've looked for a while for one and have not found anything. Almost all of them are 60"x20" and we need one that's more like 30 or 36" deep.

One of these days I'm going to stop in at a metal shop and get a quote on custom making one that my sled drops into.

As for the extension past the tailgate you can buy extensions from northern tool but I would think you'll have problems with 200 lbs+ cargo bounce around that far back (metal flexing, play in the attachments etc...).

Another issue is being able to see the tail lights with a big house back there.

If you find something that works or a good way to modify one post back and let us know.

I made one a few years ago to hang off of my Isuzu Amigo. Funny sight! Anyway, I made the hitch rack, used 1" angle to make the frame of the storage box, then used 1/4" Plywood to close it in. The door was on the end, and I made a twist lock lever, sending round bar into the top, side and bottom of the frame to keep the door closed. The hight of the box blocked the tail lights, so I added trailer lights to it. Keep that in mind if you do the same thing.

Something else to consider is the height of your hitch. If you make a rack, you may have to increase the hight so it won't drag going up and down the access. That thing really hangs out there.

Weight wasn't horrible, but it was awkward. I was able to put it in the receiver alone. Sucked, but doable.
