SD Duck hunting

Recommended Posts

Plenty of ducks. Lots of water, although we have been in a "drought" for the past 6-8 weeks. Saw 3 different quarters of corn were combined last friday night already west of Sioux Falls; probably was combined as earlage for cattle feeding. Some soybean fields have been combined...lots of acres that were flooded this spring are now dry enough that the farmers have gotten into those spots and were able to chisel plow under the weeds. Things should really be cranking up soon now with this wind today and no rain in the forcast.

I was out for the opener in the NE part of start and found plenty of ducks and geese. Water was up compared to prior trips but has dropped a great deal over the last couple months as it has been very dry. I did not hear or see a pheasant the entire stay.

I put in for a lic. but didn't get drawn. When I have pheasant hunted out there I have always seen a lot of ducks--just wondering is there enough hunters to push them around to keep them flying? I don't want to jump shoot them if they are not flying.

Also when putting in for the lic. is there better odds of getting a 10 day vs. a 3 day. I talked to one guy and he has gotten a lic. from there the last 6 years straight--just lucky or what?
