Patching in-between foundation block?

Recommended Posts

On the exterior of our house, some of the cement inbetween the blocks has popped out. Should I plug it up with good old regular cement? I have a bag of fast setting post cement out in the garage or would I be better off going with some sort of patching compound. This is the first time I've had to do "masonry" work. grin

The procedure is referred to as "tuck pointing." Clean all the loose mortar from the joint(s). Get yourself a bag of $4/80lbs block/brick mortar, not concrete mix with large gravel/stones. Get a small vee-shaped trowel for mixing and holding the mortar and a tuck point trowel (6 to 8 inches long and 1/2 inch wide) for pushing the mortor off the other trowel into the joint.

Fill the void joint and pack it in. You can use a joint finishing trowel or a dowel rod or other rounded device to smooth the new joint out. Clean any slops or spills with a stiff brush and water.

Hope this helps. Just did this to my place last week.
