One crazy summer!

Recommended Posts

It's been a crazy summer, with a kid graduating and leaving home for tech school, and granddaughter on the way and work, work, work. And now the daughter has decided she's getting married in a year - in our backyard. But the hubby's boat motor blew up this spring, so he sold the boat, and I haven't been out fishing since ice season! There went my favorite stress reliever! crazy

Tell me some good fishing stories so I can live through you all vicariously. Please! Be descriptive so I can imagine it!

Had my parents and niece up to my place last weekend to fish and hang out by the lake. Mom caught her first walleye about 200 yards from my dock.

It kept running and she was doing everything possible wrong, she was reeling against the drag, not keeping pressure on the fish etc. She got it to the side of the boat and dad netted it. He was shaking in disbelief, she asked "what kind of fish is it?"

Oh yeah it was 30.5 inches and just over 11 lbs!

It has been a crazy summer for me too. Decided to put in my first ever vegetable garden, so with rocky and hard soil I built 3 4X8 foot raised beds and 4 2X2 raised boxes, and one 2X3 foot box. Did everything wrong that I could, used top soil from local big box store (way too heavy soil) didn't realize all those pretty white butterflies were cabbage loopers, way too much rain up here, didn't fence my beds, and found that gardening cuts in to my fishing time way too much. Never even got the boat into the water till Aug 20th. So this week I have been hitting a local lake almost every night trying to make up for lost time. So far this week 2 18" walleye, 20 sunnies all over 8 inches, and 3 northerns. Last night I was fishing for sunnies when I got a strong hit on my little spinner with a micro nymph on it 5 minutes later I boated a 27" northern. Cast back out and wham I saw this big head clear the surface and inhale my bobber, it cut through my power pro like it was thread. Two minutes later my bobber comes floating to the surface. Moved across the lake looking for sunnies again, right before dark I had another hit on my 8# test power pro with a 1/4 ounce jig and a half a leech. My line went zinging off the reel, what seem like at least 10 minutes and there in my net was a 30 1/4" northern. It cut through my line in the net so I decided to call it a night.

lambjm, nice fish! And Auggie's description of mom fishing sure had me chuckling. Can you believe I haven't even bought a fishing license this year? I'll have to get one now, since I'm heading up to Mille Lacs in a few weeks, just a few days after I get back from Rochester - I'm going to go to an ultrasound appointment with my daughter so I can see my granddaughter wiggle and squirm.

All things considered, I'm not sure which trip I'm more excited about. These days, any time not spent canning tomatoes and salsa is a good time. I'm pretty sure the tomatoes are winning! grin

Well, I'd better get back to work (Yep, I'm actually cruising through the forums for work-related purposes as I research the art of turkey calling)

Happy Monday, everyone!
