HELP Motor wont start

Recommended Posts

Went fishing yesterday morning, moved from spot to spot, the motor ran fine. Parked at the dock after fishing, backed the trailer in the water, tried to start the motor and it would turn over but not fire at all.

The motor is a 2001 200hp Merc Optimax, I have checked the fuses on the motor like the Manuel suggests but all are good.

Any suggestion before it gets sent to a mechanic

Oh yes the old pull the kill switch when dad is not looking trick. I have had that happen a coulple of times. The first one is the one that gets you.

Funny how worked up a guy can get when his boat doesn't start and it ran just fine all morning grin

Good thing it's a cheap fix. May be something worthwile to place an extra one in the boats storage. Has anyone ever had one leave the boat without anyone noticing it?

Good Luck

Steve

First time on my boat I didn't even know that switch existed. Sounded like my battery was dead, so I went through the hassle of pulling the battery and swapping in a trolling motor battery. Then guy on the doc asks if I have the gas turned on and I tell him "I don't think I need to turn the gas on," then I look in the boat and see the 'run' switch. Fired right up. arrgh.

Camen wins the prize, my son must have bumped it when he tried to start the boat.

Thanks

Been there, done that, had a bruise the size of my palm on my forehead after I got home and started tearing everything apart. grin It's a good learning experience.

I did this last fall. Got the boat launched, cranked and cranked and cranked. Took the hood off, inspected the plugs, wires, etc. After 20 mins or so, frusterated and at this point, farely upset. Looked down at the tiller handle and the tether run switch was off. Smacked myself in the face, flipped her to run and fired right up.
