Re-Finishing a Shotgun

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I've got a little .410 my dad gave me when I was 12. It's had it's fair share of use and is starting to show it. I've always taken good care of it with solvents and oils, but it never had a nice finish even right out of the box. It's a very cheap gun. Just a single shot break action. Over the last few years it has developed some spot rusting as well as minor pitting. Just wondering if there is anything cheap that a guy can do himself to re-finish it??? I don't want to break the bank, but I also don't want to see the gun rust away.

Buy a package of 0000 steel wool and a small can of linseed oil. The steel wool will take away the rust and basic crud. Bronze wool is nice too IF you can find it. Then carefully scrub hell out of the wood with some acetone or varnish remover. Let wood dry for a couple days and then begin rubbing linseed oil into the wood....a little each night......for sixty eleven nights or so. Buff it all the time with the same 0000 steel wool.

Report back on what it looks like in a couple months. Good for another thirty years.
