What's good this time of year?

I'm planning on taking my grandpa out for his first time ever trout fishing next week and I was just wondering what's the best way to fish for trout this time of the year? Split-shot and worm/waxies? In-line spinners/small raps? I'm also bringing my fly rod and what's the best flies to be using this time of the year? Just want the old guy to get into some action as he hasn't been able to get out since his transplant 6 yrs ago. Any thoughts/idea would be appreciated. Also, I'm just taking him to the whitewater area. He doesn't want to be in and around wooded shorelines as it's tough going on him.

one of the bait/spinner guys will have to confirm but a small spinner works all year round.

As far as the fly rod goes The hoppers are out and alot of terrestrial patters like beetles and ants should also work well if you looking to fish on top. The standard hares ear and Pheasant tail work all year round if your dragging nymphs

I can echo the pheasant tail suggestion, that worked pretty well for me last weekend.

A buddy of mine had luck on his spinning gear with a 1/64 oz jig and a piece of crawler (bout 1/3 of a crawler)

we both caught about the same numbers... mine were bigger though smile

for spinning gear, number 6 and number 9 Panther Martins with silver or gold blades, jointed rapalas either size 5 or 7 and number 6 x raps have been working well almost all year. Worms are great to have as long as the stream allows for it
