Crank Bait Alteration

Lately I Have Been Experimenting With crank Baits In The Weeds And River .. What I've Done Is Remove The Rear Set of Trebbles .. It Seems To Help With Snags And Such.. Havn't Noticed Much Change In The Crank's Action .. Especially When Rippin' Or Trollin' ..

I Sometimes Fish Crankbaits With Only A Belly Treble Hook For Bass. Mostly This Is For Wake-Baiting With Floating Cranks. I Broke The Hook Hanger Off Of My Favorite Shad Rap A Few Summers Ago While Trolling For Lake Trout In Canada. I Was Disappointed, But Kept Fishing The Lure Because It Was My Favorite. I Spent An Hour Getting Hits And Only Hooking About One In Five Before I Finally Switched To A Different Lure. The Action Still Was Awesome, But Sometimes Belly Hooks Are Needed The Most, And Sometimes Tail Hooks Are Needed The Most.

I have cut off one of the three hooks on the trebles or installed a single hook on the rear of the bait and had it perform well in snaggy and weedy conditions. For sparse weeds and many crank applications I'll run 30# power pro and when I feel a weed stalk, stall the bait and then give it a rip which rids the bait of the weeds and helps to trigger strikes. The 30# PP works well in snaggy conditions, most times you can pull the lure free off of woody cover with a steady pull but you may have to re bend the hooks back into alignment.
