sinker?

Recommended Posts

was out today fishing with a spinner rig, in more or less about 20'.
I generally use a 1/2 ounce sinker most of the time with out any problems,
but today there was a little better chop compared to when I'm usually out and I was having problems keeping my line closer to me know matter how I was trolling.
It was pretty much like the current from the waves was taking my line out further becasue I didn't have a heavy enough sinker, even when I was trying to keep my boat closer.
Does this sound pretty accurate?
How heavy should I go, to about an ounce?
Maybe this is why I wasn't getting anything to bite that I was seeing closer to the bottem.

thanks

Dano, You must have let everything go over your head in referance to the "hatchet blade" thread. If your fishing spinners they have to spin in order to be effective. In ideal conditions the "standard" would be 1 oz per 10'. Based on that you should have went with 2 oz weights. Throw in wind.....maybe 2 1/2-3 oz. As I said earlier in above said thread (that rhymes smile.gif) I use 2-3 oz. BB all the time. Live bait rigging , 1/2 oz. maybe. Did you get a bunch of those harnesses made up? Fun after a while, I always go over board and make up all different colors and sizes. Sort of addicting! wink.gif. can it be luck?

WELL, what can I say, HEH!
I was using 2 ounce BB, but after losing a couple leeches, I gave up, figured it was to hard to detect bite.
So i just went back to my normal lindy rig, or spinner rig, with the walking sinker, this is were I was having the problem as I only had 1/2 ounce in my box of goodies,
so, is it the same rule of thumb, with these sinkers like the BB's?

I just saw your reply in the deep trolling raps section about rods you use, maybe this is my problem with useing bottem bouncers, I use a med. action 6.5 rod, probably not stiff enough eh?

You should be able to feel that leech rip off ur hook. Do ya have a good graphite rod? Are you using a superline or mono? You should be able to feel ever little nitch or knock. You have to have enough weight to keep that spinner going or the walleyes will turn the other way. takes time to learn it dont give up right away. And ya holding on to 2oz for 5 hours can and will make ur wrist sore.

You say you lost some leeches? That tells me the fish were "down" there and willing to bite. You need heavier rods for this type of fishing. Trolling vs. live bait rigging is very different. Rigging involves a lot of boat control. If you're being blown around there is little boat control. Rigging is fishing specific areas slowly and methodicly, usually knowing the fish are there already. If the wind is kicking up it may be very hard to control the boat at times. I will drift fish at these times, either with BB/spinners or live bait rigs. I use a drift sock to slow the speed of my drift. Drift socks tied to the middle cleat of the boat will keep you sideways to the wind allowing you and your partner to fish in a constant direction.
