Help Please- Overheat/Impeller

First mistake, I let someone borrow my boat. He took it out for a couple hours and realized at the end of the time period that it was not spitting out any water. He said he only had the boat idling, (just enough to pull cranks) but it did run for 2 hrs this way. Did he ruin the motor? I havnt had a chance to take a look at the impeller or run the boat since this time. Is there any symptoms I should look for? This is a 2001 Merc 125. I am not someone who claims to be a mechanic so I apologize if this is a stupid question. Thank you for any help given.

1 symptom may be it doesnt turn over anymore

2 have the compression checked should be within 5 psi of each other

3 it will start rough, run kinda weak and wont idle.

4 on that new of a motor there should be a over heat warning that will annoy the heck out of you if its going off for 2 hours, if whomever didnt adress what that beep was they would be buying me a new motor ASAP.

another thing you could do is pull the plugs. if they are white colored it may have over heated if there brown or black your good to go.

If he TRULY only ran it at low idle it is possible there was no or little discharge (pee hole stream) from the engine. Hard to imagine it would run for two hours if water pump not functioning properly.

I suspect you do not have a problem.

I would tend to agree.

Check for obstructions in the tell tale and try running it on the hose first just to check for flow, then take it to the lake and back it in and fire it up.

When was the last time you replaced the impeller? If it hasn't been replaced for a while, plus you had some sort of obstruction it's possible there wouldn't have been any stream. If it's been more than 3 years have the impeller replaced anyway.

Thank you all for your responses. Helped calm some nerves. I put the muffs on yesterday and started it up and there was a stream coming out so I am hoping everything is okay. I plan on changing the impeller just to be safe. Thanks again for the help.

    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
