3 way rig for trolling Raps deep?

Recommended Posts

I have never tried a 3 way rig for fishing raps in deep water (15-20ft+). What lengths of leaders ect do you use to rig this up? any info would be appreciated.

A good rule of thumb to follow:For every foot of line to your dropper weight, use 3 feet of line to your bait. For my dropper line I like to use a lighter lb. test line than what I'm using as my main line. I also tie on my weight(bell sinker, etc)using plain overhand knots. That way, if you get hung up, you will only lose an inexpensive weight instead of an expensive Rap. Tight lines and wet nets.

Instead of 3 way, try using snap weights which are more versitile than 3 ways.
Say you are fishing 25' of water and you want to put tour rap 2-3' above the bottom, let out 50-75' of line then attatch a 2-3 ounce snap weight to your line and let out until you make contact with the bottom then adjust you line length so your snap weight will make the lure run at the proper depth.
That way you won't have all that hardware of a three way going past the fish where the snap weight will be long past the fish and all it see's is your lure.
I didn't believe in snap weights until my brother pulled in three 17-19" walleyes in 25' of water. All the walleyes in shallower were small or wouldn't bite. And he caught these walleyes mid-day! They work!
Good Luck!

Generally I use a 5-6 foot mono leader for my raps when using three-ways. Three-ways allow you to postion the bait much better and allow you to fish specfic spots much better than snaps. You also do not need two people in the boat when using three ways. You will also need to refer to the trollers bible to match your lure with your # test when using snap weights. You can run rapala original floating raps with a three ways and know for sure your at the right depth. Like Finlander said, snap weights do work, I mainly use them fishing suspended fish..

Three way rigs work well with a baitcaster reel that has a flippin switch. This allows you to adjust your depth quickly and easily.

Good Luck

Instead of using three ways I like to use a Heavy Bottom Bouncer. Anywhere between 1oz and 3oz with a 3' to a 6' leader. When using this setup you can tell how far your crank is running below the bottom bouncer.

For a leader I like to use 12lb mono for clear water and 14lb fireline in dirty water. I like useing the fireline b/c it has more resistance to break offs than mono.

Once you learn to fish this way you really cant go wrong.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
