DNR INSTRUCTORS/SAFETY CLASSES

Recommended Posts

Hi to everyone out there well I completed my online Hunters Safety filled out the question and answer part, since I am prior Military it states I do not need to do the range part of the testing I printed out my voucher so I could take it to an instructor. The bad part is that some of the instructors I have called, emailed and even texted have not replied back. I dont need the course I believe all I need to take is my voucher, my dd214, the question and answer sheet, and a First Aid Kit for review and get a signature sign off. I am not required in the State of Minnesota to have a safety certificate since I was born in 78 but I would like to get it and my paid voucher is only good for a year I believe. I would also like to venture into hunting in other states...maybe.

I have been away from the forum due to the fact that I decided to go back to college and I finally obtained my Associates Degree in Criminal Justice- Police Officer and am volunteering in the Minneapolis Police Reserves.

Thanks for any info,

David Pena

I might be wrong here but you might actually have 2 issues at hand here. Your FAS and Advanced Hunter Ed cert.

Some states will require the FAS cert and others will require both the FAS cert. and the Advanced Hunter Ed certificate, depending on what other states you plan to hunt.

Personally, I would call the DNR office and explain your dilema. I would also check into the other states you plan to hunt to see if they require the Adv. Hunter Ed cert. More likely the mountain states like CO, MT and ID require the latter. But again, I could be wrong on this.

As far as I know most states just require a normal SAFETY HUNTERS CERTIFICATE like they do in the state of Minnesota. I have looked into a few states and they require just basic Safety Certificates. For example in Texas where I want to go I missed the cut off date by one year, down there I would need to have been born in 77 so that I wouldn't need one. In minnesota I am fine but as I said I want to get it and get it over with. In Wisconsin I believe I can get bye since I am prior Military and (i need to get a response from their DNR)might be exempt from needing a safety certificate. I do know that some states require a specific BOWHUNTERS EDUCATION certificate if hunting with a bow or Advanced certificate if doing special hunts.

The problem I am having is actually contacting anyone on the list of classes or instructors so that I can show up on their field/range day have the instructor look at my questions and answers see my voucher and sign off on my sheet so that I may get my certificate in the mail.

I'm having the same issue, although I have no military background. I completed my test online, filled out the written portion and now need to find an instructor who will review my material and get me certified. Frustrating when out of state lottery deadlines for this fall are soon approaching!

I contacted the dnr and have found myself filling out applications to become an actual Volunteer Youth Firearms Instructor and I test today. hope it all goes well ill get two birds with one stone and add to my resume as well as my volunteering efforts first with the MPD Reserve and now as a DNR Trainer/Instructor it would be nice to give back to the community.

You probably could lol but Its not that big of a deal I am prior military and showed the instructor my DD214 plus my voucher and all the other questions I needed to fill out and He said all i needed after that was to take the 50 question exam and if I pass I will get my certificate bad part was that he forgot his Test so I have to meet up with him and hope that I get it done before any govt shut down if it happens lol.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
