Three way crank bait rig.

Recommended Posts

I was watching a guy this winter drag 2 cranks behind a 3 way rig, first crank tied to the 3 way rig, second crank tied off the first crank. Guy on tv said he caught most fish on first crank.

Thought I would try this set up this weekend. First crank was a rattle crank, second crank was a jointed crank. All the walleyes I caught were on the second crank.

Any one else run this setup? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

I've tried it but have not been too successful with it. Seems to really kill the action on the front crank in many cases, also seems to cause more issues with tangling, etc.

I usually use storm original thunderstick jrs as the front crank (the original ones made by storm, not the ones they sell now) as they seem to have the best action when tethered to another crankbait ...... an trick told to me by a guy who fishes the river A LOT!

I bet the "guy" you where watching was Eric Olson down on Pool 4. This system works great where it is legal. It does kill the action of the first lure, and if that is what the fish want then bammo, it's there. It works super with Original floating Rapalas, not a bunch of action to begin with but you can give them one mild and one normal to chose from.

If you end up with tangled messes, you are probably bouncing one of the lures off the bottom causing all sorts of problems. Next time it happens, try a longer dropper line.

The rig actually worked better than I thought it would. I ran a 8 inch drop line with about 3 feet between 3way and first crank and another 3 feet between 1st crank and second crank. I was running in 8-14 feet of water. I didn't do much experimentation due to lack of time.

It just seemed like, Eric(I don't know if that is his name), was catching most of his fish on the front crank.

I was seeing if I was doing something different than Eric was doing.

Over all this is a great set up that I think I will be using it a lot more.
