GoodToGo
I have a 1997 Starcraft Superfisherman (19'). Last year I developed a leak, I assume from a loose rivet. I filled the bilge with water and water dripped out the back end of the hollow keel. On this boat there is a riveted hull which then a has an additional formed cover plate riveted over the keel. This makes a hollow keel which is open to the water from the stern. This hollow keel covers whatever rivet is leaking, so from the outside I have no way of knowing which rivets are bad, or getting at them to replace. Maybe a couple hundred rivets hold the keel on. This looks like a major job, are there any places in Minnesota, preferably northern Minnesota (Duluth?) that do this kind of work? I am in Grand Rapids. The hull has a 10 year warranty, which is of course expired. There is not much for Starcraft dealers in Mn. Thanks.
Steve Bakken
It's probably not a rivet. There is a seam in the aluminum where the bow starts to curve upward in the front. This seam is sealed by a rubber gasket which is sandwiched between the hull and the keel, which dries out and crackes. Every time we've repaired one of these, that gasket has always been the culprit
Surface Tension
I agree with Steve that it is likely the keel gasket. If it were my boat and considering the location of the leak I'd try a sloshing compound. It is used in aircraft floats to seal seams and rivets. In this case you'd pour it in the bilge and let works its way to the bow.
