1996 30 hp Evinrude

vman59

Question

I have a 30 hp evinrude(1996) I am having issues with. It starts and runs smooth and quiet up to about 3/4 throttle and its like it wants to go the last bit but won't. It gets right up to the point of getting the boat on plane and thats as far as it goes won't quite get it up on plane. I have checked the linkage and the carb is opening up all the way, have changed plugs and they seem to be fine but still changed them. I use nothing but premium gas and evinrude or quicksilver 2 cycle oil. I was told to put outboard carb cleaner in the fuel and to spray the carb but have also been told not to do either. Any help would be appreciated.

How long have you had this motor? Has it been running fine until now or is this the first time out this year?

Is the primer bulb staying firm? Check and double check all the fuel lines and fittings to make sure it is not sucking in air anywhere. if you can, put a different line on to rule that out, or if its been awhile its probably time for new stuff anyway.

Sounds like a possible syncronization issue, so i would check that second. I am assuming you dont have a repair manual so hopefully someone else here can give you the procedure for checking that as i am not that familiar with that era of evinrudes.

Also not a bad idea to do a compression check.

I'm sure smarter people than me will have more ideas and questions for you
