GPS location in tiller boat?

On my tiller (not your model) I mounted the GPS antenna on the rear starboard side on an access hole cover. This allows for easily removal and if I decide to remove permanently some day I'll only have to buy the access cover and the hole I had to drill for the cable is gone, unlike if it were mounted on a permanent part of the boat. Not sure if you have that option on your rig but it might be something to look at.

I'm not up to speed on Humminbird units, but I have Lowrance and DO NOT mount the antenna close to the graph. It will interfere and will not work at all. They (the factory) originally mounted the antenna on the rear port side just a few feet from my graph and it worked great, but then I added another graph which I mounted between the GPS puck and the original graph and that was close enough to bring the entire GPS system down and I could not lock onto a satellite. After monkeying around with it for a while trying to figure out if my puck went bad or if something else was messed up, I unscrewed the puck and started moving it around and my GPS signal came back...moved the puck near the graphs and they all when haywire again. I then mounted the puck on the other side of the boat in the rear and everything was good.

It's probably minor but I like it towards the rear because that is where I'm sitting looking at the graphs a majority of the time fishing and maybe that helps a tad with the accuracy of my position.

I am installing a 998c si in a lund alaskan and was wondering where is the best location for the gps receiver?

The best place to put it is where it will have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky.

The next consideration is to put it close to your transducer, if possible, which MAY help sync up the position / depth display between your gps, map card and sonar. Although IMO there are some guys who get too hung up on this, and personally I think it's a minor detail you don't need to sweat.

LMIT makes a good point about trying to stay at least 3 feet away from your head unit. I've seen them work great when mounted that close, and I've also seen them completely lose functionality, like LMIT described. Best bet is to stay away.

Gunnels, access panels, and bow plates are all good options for good mounting locations with easy access.
