fishergurl
Whitewater apparently flows through this park. Planning on going on my first trout fishing trip in June. Any thoughts or advice on Carley State Park, and fishing Whitewater for trout? If you don't want to post on here, feel free to PM! fishface
It's a nice park. Don't just fish in the park though drive around you'll find a lot of places to try. Mostly down stream and also on the two other branches. If you are going to spinn fish, I've done well with little silver spinners. Throw them up stream and bring them back just fast enough to keep the blades turning. I like fly fishing or "leader tying" as I call it. I like nymphs, pheasant tails, scuds, black wet flies, and on top, little elk hair caddis's in the color or shade of the day. Bring a camera, it's beautiful down there. Make sure you post how the trip was.
fishergurl
I don't own a fly rod, I was just planning on using my 8ft Crappie pole. So if I drive down stream, will I see the water from the road, or will I have to talk to someone to find other areas to fish? Never been down in that area. It will be all new, I am just jumping in! ted4887
http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fishing/trout_streams/south_mn_maps.htmlCheck out maps 7,8,10,11 to see the WW stream and the regulations as well as easements that it has. You will definitely see some people down there, but you should have no problem catching fish. The whitewater is full of good trout fishing. And like fishface said, don't forget the camera! It's a great area to take some photos. Lots of good hiking in the area as well. You will see water from the road in some spots, and in others it will wind away a bit. Highway 74, which runs though the Whitewater SP, runs parallel to the stream. You're never too far off the water when you are on that. Scudly
I stayed at Carley once. OK to camp but all I caught within the park was chubs. Anywhere in and around Elba is going to be good. North Branch good too just further downstream. Carley likely more relaxing versus being in the valley can be quite the circus at times. Plenty of good fishing spots just need to drive to them. fishface
Your crappie pole will work fine. I love little mepps and pan. martins.I call them fish finders. You'll catch as many as many as you want if you're sneaky and fish'm slow and by the bottom if it's tough. When they are really going, they'll come charging across the stream for'm.I got my hat handed to me at Mille Lacs thurs. I think I'll head south. Walleyed_Trout
I'd stay, camp, hike in Carley and fish, fish, fish in the Whitewater/Elba area.
