Let the fish tell you what speed is best. Spool up with a good superline like Fusion. I like the 8/12. Longer 7-8 foot rods work best with a moderate to slow tip.I also like the rod to be extremely sensitive so the best graphite you can afford, the better. I like to start out slow, just enough to feel the bait wobble. If iam marking fish and no takers, then ill increase speed. Ive caught fish at 3.0mph after a cold front. Thats what they wanted. But a good rule to follow is start out at 1.5-2.0 mph GPS. Good Luck

When you troll, is there a certain amount of line you should let out and or certain lures. I am new to trolling and I don't ever seem to have much luck. I have a trolling motor that goes speed 1-5 but I do not know the speeds (mph). From the message above I would start with one and continue on, but I wonder about the lure or bait and the lenght behind the boat. Any help is appreicated.

Check out the book "Precision Trolling". It tells how much line to let out to get to certain depths with many different lures. Basically, the more line you let out the deeper it goes until it reaches its max. Line diameter can also play a role in lure depth. So all in all, there are many different factors to consider when trolling. Hope that helps, and good luck.

Can anyone suggest a tool that will allow me to control my trolling speed? I do not have room for a kicker motor and my bowmount works well only in lindy rig scenarios. And my 140 hp will do 2.5- 3.0 mph on the gps min. Maybe 2.0 mph in a wind.

Other than selling the boat or spending tons of money mounting and buying a kicker, does anyone have any suggestions?

BD,

You can drag drift socks to slow you down. In my younger years before I could justify the expense of drift socks I took two new 5 gallon paint buckets, drilled holes in the sides of them so the water would flow and drug those behind my boat while I was trolling. Two of these will slow you noticeably. Hint... use strong rope on the buckets...

BD,

Like waverunner suggested, get a big driftsock. Also you can slow yourself down even further by backtrolling and dragging the driftsock from the front of your boat.

Thanks all.. I have tried the back trolling thing but that boat doesn't handle well doing that. After reading the responses I noticed that they make both drift socks and trolling socks. Price and strength being the biggest differences.

The plate almost sounds like the way to go. D-man most of what I read though says going forward on a regular troll is how it is to be used. Would the pressure from the prop in reverse cause any damage? Just curious..
