Morson LOTW preseason check-in

Recommended Posts

Well guys, I have some serious cabin fever. Looking forward to heading up to Morson in a couple of weeks to put the water in, etc.

Has anyone heard of any news/changes up there over the Winter or early Spring?

All of the area resorts still open for business?

Anyone have any news toys?

Anyone trying new techniques or species this year?

It would be fun to organize a meet-n-greet sometime this year up there. Maybe on the water.

We were up to our trailer last week for the end of walleye season. Didn't seem to be any break-ins this Winter. Peterson's Store is open. Morson Cafe still closed. Other than that nothing new. Plan on getting back a week before opener.

I purchased a new boat last November laugh. Kept the same trailer, outboard, etc. Started rigging it two weeks ago. Almost water ready. Got to give it a local test run, then opener on Mille lacs , then Morson May 24th thru the 28th. grin

Sweet - what kind of boat did you get?

Good to hear about no break-ins so far.

As far as fishing goes, my son is super excited about smallie fishing, so I'm going to have to learn about where and how to fish them (on purpose). If anyone has any tips, please share/PM. I'm also going to make myself fish cranks more instead of pulling spinners or jigs.

I got a new Alumacraft Tournament Sport 1850. It is sweet. Lots of rod storage, lots of dry storage. 25" transom, 2XB hull, air ride seats. Kept my 05 Shorelander Trailer, 04 Merc 150 Opti and all other accessories. Just completed the last of my rigging yesterday. Water test on local lake coming this week. Talk about cabin fever.

Tee it up for the first time of the season today.

I've just gotten started on fishing Smallies on purpose so may input will be of limited help. Rebel Crawfish lures in a variety of colors and Shad Raps in the crawfish color thrown against rocky shorelines in the evenings have brought me some luck. Others on this forum can add a lot to that, I'm sure.

Looking forward to getting up there in June more than ever. Missed our March ice fishing trip this year because of and new little girl! We've had good luck fishing smallies with plastic crawfish or pumpkinseed tubes (which maybe look like crawfish}. I would like to give WFB a shot for the Lake Trout this summer.....hopefully the portage will be open! Seem a bit lost once we get up there. Anybody have any thoughts on where to start and what to target them with? We use tubes or spoons in the winter. Also would like to explore a little more with walleyes and try some different techniques and cast for the muskies...good thing for the 14 hours of daylight! Lastly, can't wait for the fish frys and cold beers after a long day fishing.

Congrats on the Tourney, East - nice boats. What do you have pushing it? I got a 19' Pro-V last year and love it. Similar boats.

(I keep telling myself) it will be fun trying new ways to catch fish. For walleyes, especially starting in mid-June is to take a few passes trolling cranks first, and then start using jigs or spinners. I also like going to a few local islands outside of Hanson bay after dinner, and instead of jigs or spinners - troll cranks.

Should be fun learning smallmouth patterns and presentations. I love catching them by accident.

Gusser, depending on your boat size, getting into WF shouldn't be too bad. We fish in the general areas of Three Sisters up there. We use the big jigs with hair or tubes. Drop em down to the bottom jig a little and reel them up. It's fun to see a trout follow your jig on the fish finder at 60 feet.

Shorelunch,

I have a 150 H.P. Optimax for the main motor on the new boat. Really looking forward to fishing out of the Tourney. Lots of great, lockable rod storage. Lots of great, lockable, dry storage. Should be a dry ride, based on the construction and design.

Gusser,

S.L. is spot on based on what I've heard regarding Summer fishing for Lakers in W.F.B Be prepared, we fish them in the Winter anf they average 8 to 10 pounds. There is no doubt about a hit when you get one. Avoid Spider wire and just vertically jig with mono. Drop your jig to the bottom then jig all the way back up to just below the surface. Drop it down again, rinse, repeat. I've heard that july is the best time, unless youu troll right after ice out. Trolling, including with down riggers never worked for me in the Summer.
