Take a kid fishing...

I have a nephew 8 yrs old who is hounding his father to go on a camping/fishing trip. As some of you may know I am now boatless but would like to help him out...the kid has great fishing potential. His father called me this weekend and said he'd like us to take the boy somewhere in the next couple of weeks. Do any of you have any ideas where we could go; I have a camper for my truck but would need to either be able to fish from shore or maybe rent a boat. Panfish would be great, this kid likes to eat fish as much as catch them. Anywhere within a few hours of the metro would work.

Thanks for any ideas.

Take him on a Mille Lacs launch. There's the chance at catching large fish from many species, he might be intrigued by the traffic and lake itself, and there is plenty of camping around.

Try Ham Lake camp ground.Dick has boats for rent as well as good crappie and blue gill action.I have even caught a couple 8# pike out there.Right off hwy 65 in Ham Lake.(close to home with little ones is nice). smile.gif

I would suggest Hok-Si-La park in Lake City (great place... tenting with beaches and playground... almost in town too) and fish in pool 4 mississippi wabasha area.. I have a blast doing that a few weeks back.. can't miss down there... lots of bass especially and fun exploring the river and the backwaters etc. Of course you would need to borrrow or rent a boat... hmmm... must be something in Wabasha for rental? Or even here on a trailer?

Thanks for the responses guys. I passed them along to my brother-in-law and it sounds like he wants to look into the launch idea - more of an adventure for the kid. Hey Crappie...is that Ham lake campground tough to get into? It seems like many places you've got to reserve pretty far in advance anymore. Makes it tough to just get away for a weekend like my parents used to do when we were kids.

Oh yeah, and Slyster - I will get out on Pepin. Been wanting to do it all year but one thing after another keeps coming up. Argg!
