GPS, downloading from/to a chip

I have a Garmin GPS with maps on a CD, which I download to a Garmin "chip". I just bought a Lowrance GPS (330c) with a pre-loaded map chip. I am wondering if it's possible, using a reader/writer, to download from the map chip to a PC and then unto a blank chip. With the Garmin I always had a "backup" in case the chip failed, or was lost. With the Lowrance there is no "backup"-----unless I'm able to do the download to a blank chip. Has anyone ever done this? One thing you learn when using a computer is to always backup your documents. With maps/chips costing so much, I don't feel comfortable not having one.

Thanks!
