2000 Malibu V6-3.1 Power Steering

Recommended Posts

The power steering pump is very loud and seems to be cavitating. The fluid in the resevoir is like froth and full of air bubbles. There's oil all over under the hood like the pump has been leaking. The fluid level drops when the car is running and comes back up when it is shutdown. This is a remanufactured pump that I installed about 18 months ago. I plan to install a new pump this time and replace all applicable seals.

The car seems to wobble when driving. The steering does seem overly sensitive. I'm wondering if the steering pump would cause this. Are there other components that I should look at? I plan to inspect the suspension and everything underneath when I do the steering pump but suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, I plan to replace the brake master cylinder. Am I OK with a remanufactured master cylinder or should I go with new?

with the engine off poor about an ounce of seafoam deep creep into the power steering reservoir and then top off with power steering fluid. Start the vehicle and let idle. The seafoam will help eliminate the cavitation (air bubbles) and as long as you keep it full there should be any air bubbles forming.

As far as the wobble. If you feel it at low speed in the steering wheel start with the tires. A separated tire will cause this. If you notice it at highway speeds than the tires could be out of balance.

Go with a new master. It will be more expensive but you will ionly have to do it once. It's a gamble with the remanufactured ones.
