Strikemaster Solo not drilling properly

Since purchasing the Laser Pro Solo 8" I am finding that it really doesnt cut any faster then say my 9" Eskimo Z51. I think this has to do with the Auger & blades itself not cutting properly.

I know that your not suppose to push down on the auger as its own weight is suppose to drill for you. I'll add I never had to do that with the Eskimo either. I've also never had to prime 5-8 times and pull 3-8 times just to start it like the Solo. Im seeing some cons in that.

Right out of the box it seemed fast and furious. Spins faster then any auger i've ever owned and it did seemed at the time to drill down by its own weight.

Well I today I decided I would tighten the blades cause I didnt do it right out of the box after watching the strikemaster video. Made sure they were nice and tight.

Took the Solo out to the lake and it would not drill by its own weight? Check the ice, check the blades, checked everything in working good order. I noticed after tightening the blades the screws dont sit flush on the blades bottom.

Tried drilling in some different areas of the lake and found that it would drill differently? Im guessing this is due to how the ice forms on that area of the lake? Some spots it would just drill about a foot and no longer drills further. Just keep spinning. Regardless it doesnt drill by its own weight after about a 1/2 - 1 ft cut deep.

Even if I push down on the auger during the drill I find it difficult that it isnt cutting the ice like it supposed too. Finally frustrated with it I put it away for the moment and pull out the reliable Z51 Eskimo which has Zero issues. Im almost having a feeling if I put the Eskimo bit on the Solo it would cut like raging ape.

Someone please tell me what is wrong or what I am doing wrong.

With the symptoms you are describing, it is usually one of a few things. My first guess would be dull blades and/or center point. Try replacing the blades or filing the center point. If the blades and center point aren't dull, then I would guess your auger shaft is probably bent. Another possibility is the angle the blades are sitting is wrong. In your case, it doesn't sound like the blades are grabbing enough of the ice.

I dont believe so. The blades are brand new and the Auger has only been out of the box 2 weeks old. The center point is sharp and not dull. The Solo was used last week and it cut without any down pressure. It only exhibited this behavior after I tightened the blades. It does not wobble.

I have cut using other Solo's before too and it feels the similiar however those would cut with their own weight. Only mines wont cut properly. If I bring it to a different parts of the lake it does cut fine then if another hole it doesnt? Its got me scratching my head.

I think you through the pitch off when tightening the blades down. Maybe too tight. Loosen them up a tad and try it. If it still does it get it to strikemaster and have them check the pitch.

I was thinking of that. But didnt bring any tools with me on the lake. Will have to see if that would work as the only thing I changed was the tightening of the blades...

So obviously when you tightened the blades, you tweeked something. The only thing you that would be able to be tweeked by tightening the blades is the angle they are sitting at. The area you are on the lake should have no affect on your ability to drill thru the ice.

How loose were the blades before you tightened them? If it was cutting fine before that, I wouldn't have messed with the blade tightness. The old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. My logic tells me you tightened the blades too much, causing the angle they sit at to be off ever so slightly which makes a large impact on how well the auger cuts because it either grabs too much or not enough ice.

It cuts the ice very very fine now that you mentioned it. It leaves the hole a lot cleaner then it did before too. If I add some light downward pressure it will cut the whole. The result is the same with heavier down pressure.

I guess the next step is to back track like you said and undo the changes.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
