Mr. Wizard
I'm looking at a used boat and motor and wondering if a 2001 75 HP mercury 4 stroke is the same design as an 2011. Is this where the carburated 4 strokes have changed to the EFI?
morepower02
A 2001 will be carburated. The newer ones are fuel injected. The 2001 is a decent motor as long as the carbs are clean and syncronized. The powerhead is basically the same as a Yamaha of the same vintage.
FM_Mike
The carbed 4 strokes can be a pain if you don't use gas fast, or don't keep it treated.Had a 2000 carbed 4 stroke that was nothing but trouble for me. Every spring even with treated gas the carbs needed cleaned. Got an EFI 4 stroke and have never had an isuue with gas, still treat when stored but like a car, turn the key each spring and away we go. Had the efi 4 stroke now for 7 years and not ever an issue. If it was me EFI is the only way to go. Never have to worry about carbs needing cleaned and sinked.
