May BWCA Trip - lake trout

Good afternoon. This May I will be making my 25th trip to the BWCA (hooray)!

From the end of the Gunflint, We're paddling West on Saganaga into the Knife Lake area, straddling the border with Canada.

Early season lake trout will be our primary target species. I have some experience fishing lake trout in May in the BWCA. However, being that lakers are such a fickle species, was wondering if anyone could offer some tactics/presentations I may not know of.

ideas...?

Lake Trout are pretty easy to catch that time of year. Your options include flashy spoons, deep-running shad raps, or for a slightly more delicate presentation I like crawler harnesses with a few big split shot to run them deep tipped with Berkley Gulp leeches. Knife has some big ones, and that time of year the water will still be cold enough that they can be found at any depth. Have fun! Check out the BWCA forums for more info...
