College in Duluth...what could be better! I too spent my college years up there and to have someone say put it off, no way! Some of the best walleye fishing right there on the Louis and great hunting for grouse if your into that as well.

We never had Flashers and wouldn't have even dreamed about spending $400 dollars on somehting like that. Rods, hooks and live bait are very cheap ways to get out and enjoy the lakes and rivers. Your not supposed to have those fancy things in college, thats when you learn about finances.

But you can always give plasma like we did!

Ahh yes I spent many cold nights standing on the ice in the harbor and on the lakes in the area. I remember being on Fish Lake walking from Hibanks through the narrows and way out on the main lake one night, all the while drilling holes with the hand auger, not catching a thing. I loved going to UMD. There are also many fantastic shore fishing spots (I mean the ones not on Lake Superior that might get overlooked). I miss the Duluth area!

I all ready got rods, lures, pole holder, slush scoops, sled( I am geting it tomarow), and a ice auger. i have two regular fish finders for summer. My grandpa gave me one and my dad has one. and we are thinking about selling them to get a flasher. I have no idea on when i will get the ice fishing shelter. It is not going to be a sled ice fishing house. It is going to be one i can pack away.

If you can part with one summer fishfinder and use that money towards a winter one, that's a pretty solid plan. Also, like I said before, check into some of the older units on Kraigslist (the "K" should be a "C") and see if anything looks like it would work for you. You might find something that you feel is worth your money. And, like many have said, look at garage sales. But make sure you do your homework so you know what you're buying, no matter which route you take.

At this part of the season, time is on your side. In just a few weeks, people will want to be moving their winter stuff out to make room, and most buyers aren't thinking about wintertime yet. Icefishing stuff isn't exactly a hot seller in May, right? wink

An alternative to a flasher is to use an LCD with TFT. You can use them in the cold too. That gives you a multi-use electronic. You can use it for the summer and I happen to like the LCD for visualization. They are supposedly slower, but I have watched many fish on my LCD and felt the bite at the same time.

yup, that's what ultimately lead to me pickin one up this year.

Garage sales are great. Uncle picked up a strike master hand auger for 10 bucks last summer, which is what I used my first trip out. Cut through 18" of ice pretty quick.

Good luck this weekend.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
