Minnow Traps

I know this has been a topic before, but I was wondering what your favorite "bait" is for the standard cone minnowtrap and also how to postion/present the bait? Any suggestions on depth of water to place the trap would be helpful. Thanks!

I posted a similar question a while ago... i tried this weekend with some decent results. I put the trap in a pond that had some lily pads and grassy areas, in about 3-4 feet of water. each day i had about 30-36 rainbow chubs. i put a crust of bread 1 day, and a dog treat and a small container with oatmeal in it ( punch a few holes in the top). i have tried it in some streams, too, but with limited success

I use dry dog food or cat food most the time.. crackers and bread others.. all seem to work well.

I sent my fiance in to the store to buy some nylons at a Thrift store.. Stuff a handfull of bait and a rock or 2 in the nylon and tie it off. It works just as well and you wont have a swelled up food mess in the end.

Shallows with vegitation is good, also creeks where there is some type of current obstruction(culvert, dam, etc) is another good location.

Thanks for the info - I tried last weekend too with little results in the trap, although did really well with the seine - Multiple dozens of spottail shiners. Man, did the fish like those spottails!

25' is the length limit without a DNR permit, and Walmart was where I picked mine up a couple of years ago - A pretty cheap investment when you consider the price of good minnows these days. Wherever you buy one, make sure it has a bunch of floats across the top, and lead weights on the bottom. And bring a big bucket!
