Jiffy pro 4 problems!

Sounds like you guys are having better luck with yours than a friend of mine's his will not start in weather below 20* unless he puts it in the pick up and warms it up and this is with warm bottles new bottles. If it is tipped over to the wrong side the air filter fills with oil and smokes like crazy. I also thought that the auger was very heavy. He had to bring it back to the one of the sporting goods stores in town to get a new fuel line on the auger the first day out as it was leaking. I like jiffy and that is all I own but was not impressed. Might have to talk to him so he can bring it back in if your's are starting and running well so something can be done to make it run properly.

I have been using mine all season with no problems. I left it in my truck all night at -25 with the propane bottle attached and then drilled holes at -15. It did take two pulls to start instead of the usual one pull that day. It is a four cyle motor, and like any four cycle you have to be careful about laying it down the wrong way or the oil will migrate from the crank case. On my gas auger, I always had to be careful not to lay it with the gas cap down, as the fuel would leak out. I am still on my first tank of propane and have drilled many holes. I really like the fact that there is no choke required, no warm up, no fuel/oil mixing, no smoke and the fuel doesn't leak on my gear in the truck. It is not light, but it works great for my typical style of fishing and the STX chipper blades really cut well and fast enough for me.

That is the correct way to lay it. The spark plug, tank and throttle are all on the same side, which should be facing up when you lay it in a horizontal position. If you lay it the other way, with those things facing down, the oil can run into the carb and air filter. If you were to turn your lawn mower or truck upside down, they would also smoke, as they have four stroke engines.

I'll pass on the advice. possible the oil is blocking the air filter and causing no combustion air to the motor. I'll let him know about the correct way to place the auger and see if this will fix the problem.

Ditto... no problems with mine. Only issue I have had is when it was -20 I had to pull it twice instead of once.

Watch the video lay it down the way its supposed to be and you'll have no problems. I never warm my bottles up... I have never detached the first bottle yet. I would estimate I have about 30+ holes so far on this auger.

Same here, no issues with my Pro 4, except the ocasional 2 pull. I think I can live with that. All my buddies are relying on me to punch holes for them now when we go out... they just bring theirs for backup ha.

I have had a jiffy white lightning 8 inch for 16 years but like others that have a wheelhouse I was sick of the smoke and smell so this year I bought the new pro 4. When I got it home I filled it with oil and it started right up and ran great. I waited a while and started it again and on the second pull the PLASTIC transmission snapped all the way across the top cover right in front of where the motor mounts to the trany.

I was shocked to say the least I had my other jiffy fall off my tailgate and roll around the back of my truck for years and never had anything break. I called jiffy and they assured me it was a fluke so I took it back to cabelas and they replaced it right away. I have used it 5 or 6 times now and it has performed flawlessly and I love it. Hopefully just a fluke.

Same here....actual conversation from last time out...

"yours is so easy, I'll just leave mine in the truck for backup"

"OK...you carry it, OK?"

There, that takes care of the "too heavy" part!

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
