a/c plug

My son has an Acer laptop (vista program) and where you plug the a/c plug into the computer that connection is loose. He has to move cord around to get it to charge. Cord is not the problem, so I am assuming it is the piece in the computer that needs to be fixed. I checked with GEEK squad and they have to send it in. They said if motherboard needs to be replaced it would cost $400-500. Might as well get new laptop. Anyway, wondering where he could get this checked out in north metro to see if it is worth fixing.

By far, my biggest beefs about laptops. I've had it happen to just about every one I buy.

In a lot of cases, it's possible to open up the case and resolder the connection.

The geek squad is a joke. Anything you take to them is not worth fixing because of the rates that they charge. All that needs to be replaced is the jack. The part is probably $10 and may only need to be re-soldered. You can get them on the net and you should be able to find someone to solder it on if you are not capable yourself. My guess is that the Geek Squad doesn't do any board level repairs, they just swap out boards. The only thing is that laptops can be a beach to disassemble.

Are you sure its not the A/C adapter? When I bought my dell I was donated a second one by someone, and boy was I glad!!!!I had the same issue. swapped the cord and boom it worked

It could be the jack on the power cord as well. Try another one before tearing the laptop apart.
