2010 Dodge Ram with 4.7L engine rattles at startup

Recommended Posts

I have a 2010 Dodge Ram with the 4.7L V8 and it rattles pretty loudly on startup for some matter of seconds...never timed it...guessing maybe 10 seconds, give or take.

The oil is changed on schedule (have 21K miles on truck) at a local service station using 5W-20 oil and a parts jobber filter. I've read that perhaps I should try a genuine Mopar filter as they may have a better anti-drainback valve setup.

Worth a shot?

For 5 or 6 bucks, it's worth a shot. I've got an older (2002) 4.7 and when it's pretty cold out it rattles for a while too. I have just figured it was piston slap. My old Chevy had bad piston slap when cold and this sounds similar to me. I may try an oem filter too just for the heck of it. Can't hurt. I have been using either fram or honeywell filters lately, whatever has been on sale at fleet. Neither of those filters are top dollar or top quality, I know. But I never had an issue and I change every 3k or less.

As far as I know its a known issue with now confirmed fix. Some people say the brang of oil will make a difference. Some say the filter will make a difference. Others say they have a couple thousand rounds and its been doing it since new with no troubles.

I agree with calling the dealer and or bringing it in and at least get the complain documented on a work order in case it becomes something more in the future.
