Cable from Laptop toTV...?

Recommended Posts

I don't visit this forum ever, so if this topic has been discussed once or a hundred times I apologize. I searched it and couldn't find anything...

I want a "cable" that will connect what's on my laptop to my TV. Is this a reasonable hope, I HAVE to imagine this exists. However, when I was at "Worst Buy" last week the guy there had no idea what I was talking about, and said it can't be done.

I just wanna make it so I can watch the vid files on my computer, on my big screen. (hunting footage, itune movies, etc.) Don't care if they are HD or not, just cables. Where these magical cables are would be great.

Any help is greaty appreciated.

Depends what kind of output port you have on your Laptop and the input on your TV. Some of the newer ones both have HDMI. That would be the easiest. Some laptops have DVI and you can convert that to HDMI on the TV (some even have DVI input). I have an older laptop and use S-Video

Find what you have on your laptop and your TV and we can help out. You can MOST CERTAINLY do this though. Lots of different ways.....

As dtro said it depends, most newer TVs have several different types of connections as to do the PC/laptops now days. Take a look at the back or side of the TV and see with connections there are.

My tv now has a VGA connection, HDMI and a few others.

So the final answer is...it depends on what you have.

No HDMI ports on the TV? If you have one on the TV this would be the best bet as you would get video and audio through this connection. But, HDMI cables aren't real cheap unless you buy them online where they can be had for dollars instead of tens of dollars at the local store.

What about a VGA port on the laptop? This would be the cheapest way to get video, but no audio, to the TV. All you would need is your basic computer monitor cable (typically have blue ends).

Just looking at my TV it has a VGA port as well with a "pc audio" port directy above it. So which would be the better route? HDMI or VGA?

Get the HDMI cable. It will provide video and sound. Go to monoprice dot com instead of Best Buy. The price if orders of magnitude cheaper. A couple bucks versus $50.
