2001 ford ranger brake question

Recommended Posts

I'm going to start off by saying I'm not a mechanic and I don't know much, but I try to do as much as I can by myself before bringing it to the shop.

I have a friend that has a 2001 Ford Ranger and the back right tire locked up on him. I'm assuming its a brake. I took the drum off and saw that one of the shoes was completely worn off. Would something as simple as that cause the tire to lock up? The pins was fine, no fluid leaking, no parking break cable stuck. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated. I'm turning for help to the HSO Pros! Hah!

Yes the shoe that fell off could easily wedge inside the drum and cause the brake drum to lock up, replace the brake shoes, make sure the pistons on the wheel cylinder move, and the brake cables dont stick, and reassemble.

I had the same thing happen on an ambulance going to a call. The issue was that the kid driving left the e brake on and drove to a call. He called me to say that something was wrong with the truck because it would barely move and really had to give it "gas" to keep going. When i got there, the brake had welded itself to the drum, we drug it up on a flat bed, took it to the fd shop and i used a die saw to cut the drum in 4 pieces to remove it. People forget about the rear brakes and this issue happens quite often. Make sure that all is free of dirt and metal shavings, check the dust boots on the cylinders get new parts including the springs and reassemble. one other thing make sure you clean the new drum with some brake cleaner and wipe out to get all the rust protectant off. Good luck
