Can tire chains be put on the front tires of a 2002 polaris sportsman 400? Or are they only available for the rear tires?

It can be done but not with chain sets purchased in town, it takes some customization. You have to use cable on the inside of the tire to help with the limited clearance between the wheel and suspension/tie rods, instead of chain links. Set it up so the cable rides a little higher on the tire and keep them super tight on the outside with bungees or something. If you are not careful you can really end up with problems. A friend of mine has it and they will really pull with 4 tires chained up- although with a 400 not sure you would need it. Good luck.

I think you can order front chains through Cabelas too. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure I saw them in one of their catalogs.

Yes you can buy chains designed for the front tires. Some will say it's bad for the front drive train. I say if you want them on the front, go for it.

I put some wheel spacers on my 2005 model and they work great keeping the proper clearance.
