Clam Summit Questions....

Johnsonator

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a Clam Summit Thermal and have been reading of people having issues with breaking the hubs. I was planning on taking it up to LOW this weekend and leaving my Fish Trap Guide home but now am a little nervous about leaving it back encase I have issues with the Summit. Anybody know why they are breaking? Can they still be used when they are broken are you SOL? Also how are the thermal summits to heat, can I do it with a standard buddy or do I need my sunflower heater? Thanks

Wish you the best on LOW you lucky dog!

My Summit has had the hub issues. I've been able to repair all damaged hubs in a matter of minutes with new washers on the exterior of each hub. What I've come to realize is when you push the hubs in to take it down, be sure to hold on to the straps.

The order in which they suggest to put the shack up as well as take it down is important, also.

If you want some peace-of-mind, bring a handful of 1" washers with a ratchet/socket and a pair of pliers for an emergency repair, if needed.

I don't have the thermal but have been able to heat mine with my buddy heater. I've used my sunflower and have found that I run it on low for 10 min. then sweat for 20 min..

This is my second season with the Summit and I wouldn't worry for a second about bringing mine to LOW. Just be sure you have your anchor kit in the bag and that all anchors and cords are accounted for.

Have fun!

My dad and I have been fishing out of one this year and I would just say follow the directions when setting up and taking down. Also just take your time as you fold it up as you could tear the fabric if you try to force it.

I have had an issue with a few of the rods popping out of the hub system. Kind of a pain, but nothing that can't be fixed in 5 min. I just have a ratchet set with me and that will fix the rod displacement as well as ratchet in my 7" lag bolt anchors. My guess is that since I didn't read the directions on setting up and taking down my issue is due to improper set up or take down.

Thanks for the replys. After a lot of though I think I am going to bring back the Summit and get a bigger flip over which is what I wanted all along before I though I liked the idea of the popup. I can't get over the flimsyness of the popups and not being able to put all my gear in it.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
