95 Chev Cavalier Overheats

Recommended Posts

I am posting this for a friend at work.

95 or 96 (not sure) cavalier overheats. He has it at a shop and they say that he has a small head gasket leak but should this cause it to overheat?

He had this same issue a couple years ago after he replaced a water pump. He brought it into a shop and it turned out that this particular engine has issues venting the cooling system and there is supposed to be a procedure on how to properly vent it.

The shop where it is at now told him that it was low on coolant so we're wondering if this is the issue of why it is overheating now. Maybe it just needs to be properly vented. Anyone aware of what this procedure is or where to find it. I know it entails more than using the bleeders that are installed.

What engine?

2.2 did have issues with the head gasket leaking externally. If the coolant went low enough to overheat the vehicle than maybe its time to replace it.

2.3 I am not aware of any head gasket issues on this one. The cooling systems can be a real pain to bleed on these.

Thermostat OK? Cooling fan working? Pressure cap tested? Head gasket leak properly detected?

An "airlift" tool works great for filling. It vacuums the air out of the cooling system, which then pulls the coolant in with mimimum air pockets.

Anyway, more info needed.
